About the production
Theater is clearly a matter of opinion for the audience. In "My Body is Your Body", however, the company Overhead Project explores the role of the viewer in a very unusual way. For this, choreographer Tim Behren has built a viewing arena that, through its bifrontal arrangement, lends new meaning to the visual axes, the symmetries and the spectatorship.
"My Body is Your Body" confronts the audience with their role as spectators and playfully questions our view of bodies and gender-specific behavior. One sits across from the other, observes the other and at the same time is exposed to his or her gaze. In the space between, three unequal performers determine the direction of the gaze, reflecting, mirroring, shifting and reversing it. They stand above each other, among each other, for each other, in front of each other, at a considerable distance. The performativity of bodies, hierarchies in human communication and the fragile balance between care and clarity, are constantly renegotiated within the performance.
Starting point for "My Body is Your Body"
Based on archetypal spatial arrangements in parliaments, the trilogy "Geometry and Politics" experiments intensively with the theater as a space of experience and deals with architectural spatial settings in each of three pieces. As the second production in this series, "My Body is Your Body" deals with the theme of delegated power in analogy to the architectural spatial arrangement in parliaments of the British model: the opposing benches/rows.
Two long benches facing each other are an archetype that is nowadays often regarded as the basic model for democracy and separation of powers. But this architectural archetype is, on closer inspection, based on an anti-democratic system that originally revolved around the centrally placed monarch as a concentration point of absolute rule.
The architecture of spaces of political assembly, is not only an expression of political culture, it also shapes that culture. In a broader sense, this also applies to the communication between performer and audience in the performative stage space. Two groups of spectators sit across from each other, look at each other, and wait for the performance to play out before their eyes - between them. Yet they themselves are already actors in this power-space structure.
The model of opposite benches is, in the political context, known as a seed for aggressive argumentation and opposing positioning. An ideal starting point to question power relations and spatially provoked behavior patterns. Small shifts in power relations can set everything in motion, they change (power) positions in no time, stir up societies and rearrange them. Units disintegrate, creating the space for the new, the unthought and the unknown.

Das „Overhead Project“ brilliert mit „My Body is Your Body“ – Athletisch und schweißtreibend, so präsentiert sich die Tanz-Zirkus-Performance. Zwischen zwei Zuschauerrängen, (…), entwickelt das Performer-Trio in einer Choreographie von Tim Behren ein außergewöhnliches Spiel von Körper und Blicken, Sichtachsen und Symmetrien, von Bewegung, Kraft und scheinbarer Leichtigkeit. Die Gruppe zelebriert den menschlichen Körper, seine Widerständigkeit und Widerstandsfähigkeit, seine Schönheit und seine Beweglichkeit. Das ist streckenweise halsbrecherisch, und dem Publikum stockt nicht nur einmal der Atem. (…) Das Publikum ist nach 50 Minuten buchstäblich aus dem Häuschen (...) eine beeindruckende Zurschaustellung von Kraft, Ausdauer, Präzision und Koordination (...)

(…) Wem gehört mein Körper? Naheliegend, dass dies Frage vor allem Tänzer interessiert, zumal, wenn sie sich so ausliefern wie im neuen Stück „My Body is Your Body“ des Choreographen Tim Behren des Kölner Overhead Projects. Die beiden Akrobaten Leon Börgens und Leonard Garcia und die Tänzerin Mijin Kim suchen die riskante Symbiose: Gleich zu zweit balancieren sie auf den Schulterns des dritten Performances. Sie schleudern sich horizontal im „Barrel Jump“ in die Luft und einmal stemmt sich Garcia gar in den einhändigen Handstand auf den Kopf von Börgens. Die drei sind spektakulär, so couragiert und schonungslos. Fraglos: Das aggressive Präzisionskalkül der Choreografie ist ein Erlebnis (….)
