SURROUND
A piece about the relationship of man to the herd, a performance course between leading and being led

The production SURROUND is an immersive performance to the social dimension of the circle. The round is arena for curious sightseers, political theater stage and at the same time meeting point on eye level. Circling around the natural arrangement of gatherings, the two acrobats and two dancers on stage demand a physical positioning for the process.

— Awarded with Leipziger Bewegungskunstpreis 2018, Jury-award of Favoriten Festival 2018, Dance-and Theatre Award Stuttgart 2017 (Public prize, Jury prize, Festival prize) —

All is turning. Concerns about the global political changes are rising. With all this devotion to the (R)ight attitude, especially one thing seems to be at stake: democracy. As if freedom and equality were utopian dreams again. Our system faces a crisis or is, at least, being put to the test; and authoritarians seize the opportunity. It is primarily the longing for power that creates a thundering maelstrom. And the most important question is: Are you in or out? While those who keep hold on power are gaining ground, everyone needs to find his or her place now – in the centre of the herd, on its periphery or holding the reins in one’s own hands.

Small shifts of power set everything in motion, they change societies, stir them up and rearrange them. Unions dissolve. Between the movement of the herd and the great escape hope emerges, rebellion is smashed down and the fear of declining security bends.

Between territorial and global, it is first and foremost biographies that globalise. But globalisation also raises the demand for individualisation and therefore the painful question: Who am I? When people can chose between traditions and cultures, politicization is inevitable. Monogamy was yesterday – at least politically speaking.

But how to cope with the growing individual needs for stability and safety on the one side, and the globally accessible space – including the tendency to set out and discover the unknown – on the other? When the radius of the individual’s political freedom gets smaller and smaller, suffocation is imminent.
