Transgressing Bodies #1
This is not about monsters. Or is it? An invitation to encounter those fleeting figures that appear within us, sometimes quietly, sometimes loudly, when closeness reaches its limits. When we don't know whether we are falling or flying. When trust is challenging.
Beasts & Bodies is dedicated to what we cannot carry alone. Between the fear of losing control and the longing for the unknown, new places unfold in the in-between. Riding through familiar and distant spaces, bodies reposition themselves, shift layers and take off. A piece that defies gravity – in an atmosphere of neon circus and fairground glitch.
What does a body look like that does not think alone? What does a movement sound like that does not yet know which direction it will take? What if trust is not a promise of security, but a courageous step towards togetherness? What beastly superpowers and sweet monsters do we want by our side?
With their unmistakable choreographic signature combining contemporary dance and acrobatics, Overhead Project creates an impressive performance about closeness, risk and what can happen when we allow ourselves to be vulnerable with one another.
Beasts have always been part of our imagination. They permeate myths and stories and shape our pop and entertainment culture – in countless forms. But it is only in our imagination that they reveal their true greatness. They embody the uncontrollable – the untamed that both frightens and fascinates us. We fear them and yet feel irresistibly drawn to them. Their appearance reflects our innermost selves: fears and deep longings. They represent what we believe we can control – instinctiveness, impulsiveness, raw power – and yet secretly long for.
The bestial transcends boundaries – temporal, cultural and physical. It is unruly and defies fixed categories. The beast is neither animal nor human nor machine – possibly even incorporeal. Beasts have always held an unbroken fascination for us – perhaps because we never quite know where they end and we begin.
Beasts & Bodies is the first part of the series ‘Transgressing bodies’ in which the Overhead Project company explores border crossings over several years.
