Lecture: Mischa Kuball
Reality report – public prepositions
Mischa Kuball, Conceptual Artist, Düsseldorf
Tuesday March 26th | 18:00
Kyoto Bar, Gereonswall 75, 50670 Köln
Public lecture about spatial settings and prepositions of spaces in public intervention projects by Studio Mischa Kuball. In this 50 minutes lecture the conceptual artist Mischa Kuball will present a.o. his projects „agora/arena“ (Bochum) and „public square“ (Thesssaloniki) in the frame of his long-term conception „public prepositions“. He will focus on his conceptual tactics of approaching spaces as a space for itself, his approaches to call bodies into action and how to think the medium of light as a guide to discover a space.
With a small number of shifts / markings a public space can already be extended into a place for exchanging views, for communication, for argument, for discussion, for debate.
The work of Mischa Kuball starts at this specific point, between the public place of exchange and visibility, and the arena, where we distinguish between performers and spectators.
Das Projekt „Geometrie und Politik“ wird im Rahmen des Mentoring-Programms durch die Kunststiftung NRW und das Landesbüro Freie Darstellende Künste e.V. gefördert.
Movement Art Award Leipzig for SURROUND
Award ceremony on 2 February 2019: Jury Statement for the “Leipziger Bewegungskunstpreis 2018”
“Anyone who sees a pommel horse hanging from the ceiling during a visit to the theatre will almost certainly find this unusual. You don’t know this from the theatre, but above all you don’t know it from the gym equipment that usually stands on the floor. And presumably the pommel horse is an object that plays no role at all in the everyday life of most theatregoers…
Overhead Project show with Surround the well-known herd instinct of the theatre visitors. That’s not what it’s about today. Rather, it is remarkable and the merit of Surround to push this social situation so to extremes. The idea of herd and circle, the juxtaposition of inside and outside, the orientation towards power – this has been implemented in a practically and playfully excellent way. What’s more, the whole evening is dramaturgically cleverly constructed, the individual elements interlock seamlessly, refer to each other in the course, the pace is not too fast to lose touch, but fast enough to nourish insecurity. The staging can unfold its fascination – somewhere in the border area of dance, acrobatics and performative installation – and it unfolds its fascination with pleasure”.
