Blueprint am 04. & 05. April im Eintanzhaus Mannheim

Zirkus, Tanz und ein ganz neues Vermittlungsformat: Am 04. und 05. April gastiert Overhead Project mit Blueprint im EinTanzHaus Mannheim. Mit dabei ist neben den Performer:innen Mijin Kim und Leon Börgens diesmal auch unsere hauseigene Dramaturgie Anna Menzel. Mit im Gepäck hat Anna ein brandneues Begleitformat zur Produktion:

Let’s get in Touch with Hair – A Careful Space
Vor der Aufführung von Blueprint entsteht hier am Samtag, 05. April um 19 Uhr ein spielerischer Raum, in dem die Teilnehmenden Gedanken zum Thema Haare und/oder ihrer Abwesenheit nachgehen können, mit ihren Haaren in Berührung oder sich einfach vor der Aufführung nochmal einen Moment Zeit für sich nehmen können.

Der Griff ins Haar wird in Blueprint auf vielschichtige Weise zum Ausdruck von kleinen und großen Gesten, die mal provokativ, mal zärtlich und sinnlich, mal an der Grenze zwischen Spiel und Ernst verlaufen. Sich in diesem Raum mit der eigenen Beziehung zum Thema Haare zu befassen, öffnet Körper und Geist für die Themen des Stücks und ist hilfreich, um die Lesarten von Körpern, Objekten und Menschen auf der Bühne zu erweitern.

Vom 26. März – 05. April lädt tanzmainz zur fünften Festivalausgabe ein. Auch mit dabei: Overhead Project mit Tänzerin Mijin Kim und einem von der Decke hängenden 100 Kilo schweren Pauschenpferd. In dem Duett Circular Vertigo entwickelt sich ein feingliedriges Miteinander der beiden.

"Beasts & Bodies" - Auftakt unserer neuen Produktion im Ringlokschuppen Ruhr

Nach einer intensiven Recherchephase im vergangenen Jahr ist es endlich soweit: Anfang Februar sind wir mit einer Residenz im Ringlokschuppen Ruhr in die Proben zu unserer neuen Produktion Beasts & Bodies gestartet. Zwei Woche lang konnten wir uns mit Formen der Bestialität und dem Unkontrollierbaren auseinandersetzen. Premiere feiern wir im Herbst diesen Jahres im Ringlokschuppen Ruhr.

Bestien begleiten uns seit jeher – in Mythen, Geschichten und der Popkultur. Sie verkörpern das Unkontrollierbare, das uns zugleich erschreckt und fasziniert. In ihrem Äußeren spiegeln sich unsere innersten Ängste und Sehnsüchte. Doch wo verlaufen die Grenzen zwischen Mensch, Tier und Maschine – und wo beginnt das Bestialische in uns selbst?

"Blueprint" on October 3rd, 2024 as part of Festival der darstellenden Künste, Cologne

The Festival of Performing Arts – Festival der darstellenden Künste / FDDK for short – takes place in Cologne for the first time at the beginning of October. Grown out of the previous one-day Cologne Theatre Night, there will now be a full program on three days!

On October 3, 2024 in Cologne-Riehl, we will be showing an excerpt from our latest production “Blueprint” three times - as a special duo version with Mijin Kim and Greta Salgado Kudrass. Each time before / after there will be a DJ set by cypher supply (at 18:30, 19:30, 20:30 & 21:30).

The performing arts festival will take place from October 2 to 4, 2024 in Cologne under the patronage of the Lord Mayor. With just one festival pass, you can attend more than 250 performances, DJ sets, concerts and after-show parties in over 60 locations! Each performance lasts no longer than 20 minutes, so visitors can enjoy a variety of different productions every evening.

Overhead Project with "Blueprint" part of Open Studio at international tanzmesse 2024

We will be presenting our current production "Blueprint" on 30 August 2024 as part of an open studio at internationale tanzmesse NRW 2024. In this extraordinary pas de deux, two performers navigate their way through patterns of human encounter and familiarity. The piece plays with gestures of invitation, confrontation and provocation. It is a duet in which contemporary circus and dance keep pace with each other.

The tanzmesse 2024 shows 27 Open Studio presentations. Three companies will each present an excerpt from a work-in-progress or touring production. After the short presentation, there will be time for questions and dialogue with the artists. The Open Studios will be moderated. Read more

Cologne Culture Prize 2024 for CircusDanceFestival

We look back on a great evening: on 14 May, 2024 the Cologne Culture Awards were presented for the 14th time. This year - just two days before the festival opening - the CircusDanceFestival was honoured in the "Young Initiatives" category. Tim Behren, Artistic Director of the Overhead Project company and the CircusDanceFestival, accepted the award on stage on behalf of the team.

The award recognises outstanding achievements and pioneering developments in culture in Cologne. With the Culture Prize, the Cologne Cultural Council aims to emphasise the high quality of culture in the cathedral city and provide impetus for its development. About the piece: In this extraordinary pas de deux, dancer Mijin Kim and acrobat Leon Börgens navigate human patterns of encounter and intimacy. With humor and an unusual repertoire of movements, they traverse a playing field of trust in order to strike the right note with each other. In doing so, they create intimate gestures of invitation and provocation that linger and shake up our cultural memory.

About the festival: Under the title "Re-Inventing Circus", the Cologne CircusDanceFestival dedicates this year's festival edition from May 16th to 20th, 2024 to contemporary circus between heritage and renewal and discusses the understanding of circus as tradition and experiment. NRW top funding dance 2024-26 for Overhead Project

We are delighted that we as a company will continue to be supported by NRW's top-level funding program in the years 2024 to 2026 and that we were selected by the expert jury, consisting of the Ministry of Culture and four dance experts, from a total of 25 applications with the following jury statement (excerpt, in German):

"With its work at the intersection between contemporary circus and dance, Overhead Project takes an outstanding position nationwide. Through its productions, workshop formats and cultural policy positioning, the company has significantly and sustainably strengthened the role of contemporary circus and dance locally, nationally and internationally. The Circus Dance Festival, curated by Tim Behren, also makes a relevant contribution here, establishing an important platform for the visualization of current aesthetics and discourses in both disciplines.

The concept for the years 2024-2026 again promises a step towards further development with innovative approaches to stabilizing the productions and dealing with exciting, highly relevant socio-political topics. Under the title "Beasts & Bodies", Overhead Project will deal with principles of transgression and body attributions.
The jury found both the development to date and the planned activities to be outstanding and came to the unanimous decision to recommend the continuation of the top funding for Overhead Project."

Cologne Dance Theater Prize 2023 for "What is left"

THANK YOU to our team & the many partners that accompanied the production – we are very proud of the Tanztheaterpreis 2023 for "What is left", which we received on December 4th, and congratulate all nominees & award winners!

Every year, the Cologne Dance and Theatre Awards recognize the best productions from Cologne's non-urban, professional theater and dance scene. Artists and ensembles have been honored for more than 30 years. This year, the prize money for the Dance Theater Prize was raised for the first time through a crowdfunding campaign.

UK Tour in March 2023

In March 2023 we travel to the UK for the first time with the company and showed our production of "What is left" at the Lowry in Salford, Circomedia in Bristol and Jacksons Lane in London. We are still overwhelmed with the warm welcome and great feedback we got from the British audience – a big thank you to all who made the tour happening!

The production "What is left" explores spatial structures that shape human communication culture. It shows the brutal beauty of frontality and the everyday social fashionwalks of this world. Read more

Publication "Circus in flux" released

The CircusDanceFestival (deputy Tim Behren & Jenny Patschovsky) released a workbook under the title "Circus in flux - Zeitgenössischer Zirkus | Contemporary Circus"! It was published July 1st, 2022 by Verlag Theater der Zeit and can be ordered now.

With analyses, interviews, commentaries and great visual material, it is dedicated to contemporary circus and presents artistic positions of German and international actors. More information & order (in German).

The publication is accompanied by this year's VOICES magazine "Re-thinking objects". A glimpse of the VOICES magazine was already available at the CircusDance Festival 2022 in Cologne!

Tabori Award of the Fonds Darstellende Künste for the Company

The jury decided: "This honors a unique signature of the merging of contemporary dance and contemporary circus, creating a performative language of its own that makes a special contribution to both establishing and communicating the formats and their differentiated thematic worlds." (translated excerpt from the jury statement)

The Tabori Prize is the nation's highest award for the independent performing arts. In addition to this, the jury awards three prizes. In doing so, it reacts to current developments and honors experimental, courageous formats of artists and groups that have convinced through a unique upcoming or through continuous developments of an experimental format. For the first time, Overhead Project, a company dedicated to contemporary circus, will receive an award. More information (in German)
